"Why we have too few women leaders" and Book Discussion of Lean In
There are not enough women in Technology. There are not enough women taking up computer science in the university. There aren't enough women working in the Academia or in industry. And there aren't enough women leaders in Technology. Is it because women aren't capable? We don't think so.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook spoke out about this in her famous TED talk, "Why we have too few women leaders" . Encouraged by the response, she then wrote a book about her experiences, "Lean In."
On Friday, 23th May, at 12 noon, Women in ICT held a screening of this talk followed by a presentation about "Lean In". The presentation was done by Mahtab Mirmomeni, founder of our club and a Software Engineer at IBM Research Australia, followed by a discussion on the book and the views it represents. In this discussion, both female and male students shared their points of views.

Women's Intro to Programming
In December 2013, Women in ICT collaborated with Melbourne School of Engineering and Google to conduct a two-day Introduction to Programming workshop. It was targeted at female undergraduate students who have no prior experience with programming. Our goal was to teach the basics of programming, show that programming is enjoyable and inspire them to learn more.
The girls created simple animated movies with Alice, a visual programming language, as a gentle introduction to the concepts of programming. Then, they proceeded to Python and web-development, and learned to apply these skills using Google Maps APIs. The highlight of the workshop was the opportunity to use python to control the movements of NAO, a humanoid robot, and compose a series of dance moves..
